Henry Hamilton
Supervisor
Coutts & Co, London
Many people have to face the prospect of a change in direction on their chosen career path. For some, what at first may seem a disaster or, at the very least, a daunting challenge becomes instead a huge opportunity, bringing new experiences that transform their lives.
That is certainly true of 29-year-old Henry Hamilton, a Londoner who had tried his hand at a number of jobs, after leaving school in the summer of 2000, before heading to Aberdeen University to study for a Masters degree in Psychology from 2001 to 2005. Unfortunately, health issues following a bicycle accident during his gap year interfered with his studies and he left Aberdeen with a Certificate of Undergraduate Education (Psychology) instead of an MA. Without the hoped-for qualification, Henry decided it was time to rethink his career.
One possibility was applying to join the police force and when he saw a G4S Secure Solutions (UK) advertisement for a security officer in a job centre, he felt that might be a good stepping-stone to his ultimate ambition. “I snapped it up, on the off chance, and the job just fitted me,” he says, still sounding surprised at what had happened.
Today, having joined G4S Secure Solutions (UK) in July 2007, he is providing secure solutions as a supervisor for one of the most prestigious names in banking: Coutts & Co, part of RBS Coutts, the private banking arm of the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS). And he’s enjoying it so much, he has put his plans to join the police on hold.
