Protecting Critical National Infrastructure
Hoover Dam is one of the US’ most magnificent examples of critical national infrastructure which along with the Davis and Parker dams further downstream, provide millions of Americans with water and energy.
Such an national icon and being so publicly accessible means that there are equally many security challenges in protecting Hoover Dam.
The three dams all fall under the responsibility of the US Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Reclamation which includes its own police force together with Reclamation federal security officers and private contractors.
Reclamation recognised the need for a high tech solution to integrate its security functions and together with G4S Technology, its’ Symmetry Enterprise Security Management System was introduced.
Don Taussig Reclamation’s chief security officer “It’s a totally innovative approach, for the first time in Hoover Dam’s history we have the capacity to combine access control, detection and assessment with a physical response strategy. The biggest benefit for me is the system’s command and control module, which enables us to identify and monitor potential security risks”.
