Medals and 2012 qualifications for G4S Sponsored athletes

Two more medals in the final day of racing in Perth capped a six medal haul for Skandia Team GBR at the ISAF World Championships in Perth
Two superb silver medals on the final day of racing capped off a six medal haul for Great Britain, in the final day of racing.
Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark pulled up to the silver medal position by winning the medal race in the 470 women’s event, while Nick Thompson made it three World Championship podium spots in as many years with a hard-fought second place in the Laser class.
The medals on the final day of competition added to the gold and bronze medals won in the first week of competition in the Finn class by Giles Scott and Ed Wright, and the silver medals won by the 470 men’s team of Luke Patience and Stuart Bithell and the Match Racing trio of Lucy Macgregor, Annie Lush and KateMacgregor.
In what was anything but a typical regatta for Skandia Team GBR, the team was thrilled to secure six places on the podium, which was twice as many as any other nation that took part in the event. The team had a turbulent start when Finn class sailor Ben Ainslie was disqualified from the regatta, then a further two teams, including G4S 49ers Stevie Morrison and Ben Rhodes, and Iain Percy and Andrew Simpson in the Star class, withdrew from the regatta due to injury.
RYA Olympic Manager Stephen Park was positive about his team’s overall performance in the context of their 2012 preparations.
“It’s been a long and testing Championship, both on and off the water for sailors, coaches and support staff alike,” he said. “I’m very pleased that as a team, GBR are clearly still on track for 2012.”
It was a great week for G4S 4teen’s Juan Maegli, who earned his qualification for the London 2012 Olympics in the Laser class. He will represent his home country of Guatemala next summer at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy.
“I didn’t do what I set out to do at the World Championships, but it’s inspired me to work even harder in 2012. I want to thank all of my sponsors, including G4S for accompanying me on my Olympic dream,” he said.
