South Africa’s leading private prison at Manguang Correctional Centre near Bloemfontein, managed by G4S Correction Services, has today hosted its annual prisoner certification ceremony.
Me Moodley, Regional Commissioner of Correctional Services for the Free State, today handed out over certificates to over 350 prisoners who have completed a range of educational or vocational courses.
Mangaung’s large adult learning education centre, “Liberty”, ranks as one of the best educational institutions in the country, with a pass rate exceeding 90% over the past three years. Its teaching staff recently won a provincial award as "Best Group of Educators for 2012".
Me Moodley will be joined at the ceremony by the Deputy Director General of Education in the Free State and its Director of ABET Education. She will be handing over the following certificates to prisoners, who spend 40 hours per week on a broad range of activities:
206 to those who have completed Mother Tongue, ABET levels 1-4 and Grade 12. A total of 8,754 certificates of this type have been issued to prisoners since 2001.
150 to those who have completed courses in Vocational Skills Development. A total of 8,754 certificates of this type have been issued to prisoners since 2001.
Johan Theron, Managing Director of Manguang Correctional Centre, said: “This is always a proud day for me and the education team as we watch members of our community being awarded for their hard work and commitment. We have a clear focus on giving prisoners the best opportunity to gain the right skills in order to enhance their chances of employment upon their release. These award ceremonies are a great example of that approach in action.”
G4S was awarded a 25 year contract to run Mangaung Correctional Centre on behalf of the Department of Correctional Services in 2000. Mangaung is the second largest private prison in the world and opened in 2001.
The purpose built prison ensures that even though facilities are extensive and provide a range of opportunities for the nearly 3,000 prisoners to learn and develop new skills, security is tight and controlled at all times.
