G4S expands in developing markets with major Brazilian contract win19 October 2012
G4S, the world’s leading international secure outsourcing group, has today announced that its Brazilian technology business has won the biggest contract in its history to lay fibre-optic cable and further develop a high speed digital data network in Brazil
Telebras, a state-owned company, in the Brazilian Ministry of Communications, has awarded G4S the £40m contract to support the Brazilian National Broadband Programme. This is a critical national infrastructure project designed to provide high-speed digital and telecommunications capability, connecting rural and metropolitan communities across the country.
G4S will certify and activate the network infrastructure and roll out more than 2,240 kilometres of fibre-optic cable in five States: Amazonas, Tocantins, Acre, Amapa and Roraima. The city of Manaus in Amazonas is first on the list of places to get the high-speed data cable and the rest of the programme will be completed within two years.
Keith Whitelock, CEO of G4S Technology businesses in the Americas said, "This is an exciting development for our Brazilian business. Building upon core expertise already embedded within G4S, we are entering a new market sector in one of the world’s fastest growing economies. We look forward to delivering an excellent service to Telebras and to positioning ourselves well for future opportunities.”
This significant contract win was achieved with the support of the G4S US Technology business, which has laid more than 3 million kilometres of fibre optic cable in the USA – enough cable to wrap around the Earth 75 times.
