Rising Korikwiang given G4S 4Teen ambassadorial status in Kenya
Africa junior 5000m bronze medalist Pauline Korikwiang has been chosen by security company G4S to be its sports ambassador in both international and local events.Korikwiang won a gold medal during the world cross country championships in Fukuoka Japan and silver medal at the world Junior championship in Beijing last year. She was picked to spear head the company’s campaign due to her process and achievements on the track.G4S will cover her expenses including training gear, apparel and school fees for the next three years as she gears for Beijing 2008 Olympics.
“I am confident with good training and preparation I can not only break the 5000m world record held by Ethiopia’s Defar Meseret but also win gold at the Olympics,” she said. She downplayed her poor performance this year attributing it to class work and bad luck. “I believe I got time on my side and the future is bright, particularly now that G4S have offered to assist,” she made the remarks during the launch of G4S 4teen sports partnership project by G4S Security Services Kenya.
“On completion of her exams in November this year, Pauline will undertake a language classes in both French and English and British council and French cultural center according to G4S Communications Manager Carlos Kioko Henry. She will also be involved in social responsibility events and motivational activities geared to further encourage other juniors take up athletics”, he said.
G4S launched an innovative sports program to support the next generation of sports stars, the G4S 4 Teens. The project aims to support young aspiring athletes as they seek to fulfill their potential on sport’s biggest stages over the years. The initiative will provide support to athletes as they seek to realize a common Olympic dream, and in so doing help inspire the next generation of young athletes to take up the sport. Apart from Kenya, three other Africa including South Africa, Botswana and Nigeria are pursuing the project.
G4S Director of Sales& Marketing Betty Koech said G4S 4teen project will design competitive activities that will further help bring out talent.” We shall host an annual G4S 4teen under 20 Cross Country Championships in the second quarter of 2008”, she said.
Athletics Kenya(AK) Secretary General David Okeyo hailed the move by G4S saying it world help the frequent migration of young athletes to other countries. “This will help us stop our athletes from taking the nationality of other countries. I want to urge other companies to come up with similar initiatives,” he said.
Okeyo praised Korikwiang saying she was one of the country’s emerging athletes expected to do well during the Beijing Olympics next year. He also pointed that AK is pleased with the performance of women athletes especially after World Athletics Championships in Osaka early this month. He promised G4S support in developing its under 20 annual championships early next year.
