Juan Ignacio Maegli has represented his country in sailing since the age of eight. Having secured the Hobie 16 Pan American medal at the age of 14, Juan continues to follow in his father’s footsteps and qualified for the 2008 Beijing Games where he returned home richer from the experience and with high hopes of achieving a gold medal in the laser class event at the 2012 London Olympics.

November 2009

G4S 4teen athlete Juan Maegli, representing the College of Charleston, won the 2009 ICSA Single handed National Championships this weekend in Corpus Christi, Texas. The Championship, an inter-collegiate regatta, took place over three days and although Juan was pushed hard to win the Championship, it was all the more rewarding as it was his first Laser Championships since the Laser Worlds.

Juan was extremely impressive. He dominated the fleet of 18 qualifiers with 10 top-three finishes, in the 18 races he sailed in the Olympic Laser class, to win the men's Championship, in the wet and windy conditions.

After his victory, Juan commented “I am very happy with this result, it is encouraging and hopefully I can continue and have some more good performances like this in the future.”

August 2009

From Thursday 20th August I am going to be competing in the Laser World Championships in Canada. It is quite an important competition for me as it‘s a chance to go up against some of the world’s finest sailors, including other G4S athletes such as current Olympic champion Paul Goodison – I am really looking forward to it.

However, I realise the task in front of me is a tough one, as I have spent the last year concentrating on my academic studies. This has meant that my preparation has perhaps not been as rigorous as I’d like it to be, but it has still gone really well, and I can’t wait to get back out on the water and continue on the road to competing at London 2012.

May 2009

After Beijing last year I have been more determined to win my country’s first Olympic medal so I am attending more international regattas and training camps this year. I am now at college in USA studying but I compete all over the world. I have just returned from the Delta Lloyd Regatta in Holland, it was good to be back sailing with such an impressive amount of competitors and in Europe and I learned a lot. My next regatta is at the end of June in Germany.
