December 2007

After three journeys of intense boat races in the Amatitlan’s Lake, against many international sailors, I won the National Laser Championships in Guatemala last month. The wind favored a lot in the last journey, allowing better movements in the Amatitlan’s Lake. 21 ships took part in the competition throughout three days for a total of 10 races.

During the three days of competition, I stayed in the first place; I am now preparing for my qualification to the Olympics Games, the next year.

Juan with G4S guardsI was invited to the G4S Christmas party in December which was a great opportunity for me to meet all those who work for G4S Guatemala. The Commercial Manager, Luis Orellana, introduced me to all of the G4S customers who attended the party; they were all very interested to learn more about the G4S 4teen program and how the company is sponsoring me and other 4teen members around the world. I presented a short resume about myself giving information about my training practices, and my obtained goals and future plans.

The early months of 2008 will bring strong activity to me where I will start a road to achieve my dream of competing at the Olympic Games.

November 2007

In November I have worked very hard at the training camp centre in Almaty.  I believe my preparation went well because when I participated in an anniversary tournament, named after Olympic Champion of Kyrgyzstan Kanybek Asmanaliev, I won.

I was really pleased with my performance as my focus next month is for the Pre Olympic Games rehearsal and unofficial training with Chinese coaches for next year.

November 2007

This month I had the privilege of training with the top Spanish laser sailor in Tenerife. I was there for 13 days sailing in heavy winds and perfect weather. The training camp was very productive because I was sailing with very skilled and experienced sailors and I was able to learn a lot from them

The main focus of my training this month is to improve my fitness and work on the techniques of sailing a laser, as I am still fairly new to the boat. I have been training at least 3 hours in the water everyday as well as gym work later in the afternoon.

On my way from Tenerife to Miami, I stopped for the night in London. I was going to be in London for almost 12 hours and I had no where to stay or any idea what to do while waiting. My local market contact, Ligia got in contact with Fast Track to see if G4S could help. Fortunately I met with Lucinda from Fast Track and with Nigel from G4S; they were both very kind to plan everything for me while I was there. A shuttle was arranged to take me from Gatwick to a very nice hotel, (which was all paid for), later I went to dinner with Lucinda and Nigel and if that wasn’t enough, a shuttle was arranged to take me to Heathrow very early next morning. I want to thank G4S for being so kind to me during my short visit in London!

Next month I will be in Miami, USA for the first 15 days and later I will fly to Guatemala to continue training for the Laser World Championships in February.

October 2007

This month I competed in Semana de Buenos Aires regatta in which I finished 9th overall. My goal was to finish top 10 so I am pleased with the result, but I know I can do better next time.

I have been training in Buenos Aires for over a month. The training is going very well as I am sailing with the top guys from Argentina, Venezuela, Uruguay, Spain and Italy.

I have been training mainly on improving my fitness, on a light day I go to the gym in the morning for 2 hours and sail for another 2 to 3 hours on the afternoon. On a hard day I do that, plus a little bit of aerobic work like running or cycling.

I am training in Tenerife with the Spanish team for two weeks and later I am training in Miami in December for two weeks.

September 2007

This month I was training in Cabarete, a beautiful beach in the Dominican Republic for almost 3 weeks. I had a very good training camp and had the opportunity to use the time to improve on my fitness and getting used to sailing a new boat.

My focus has been getting to know the Laser Boat better and to work on my fitness. I was also training with a new coach and it was a very good 3 weeks of getting to know each other better. Next month I am going to Buenos Aires for 1 month to train and also do two regattas while I’m there.
