The Cash in Transit (CIT) industry is continually seeing a dramatic rise in attacks year on year with and increase by 21.3% over the last six month (April to September 2007) on the previous year in London alone. To combat this, we are continually investing in new technology and training as part of our crime reduction strategy.

Investment in crime prevention

We are proud to be the first CIT supplier to make a significant investment and partner with SmartWater Technologies Ltd a crime prevention technology specialist.  SmartWater’s expertise is in forensic coding, and they have been working with us to develop a solution for use in our cashboxes that will act as a deterrent against CIT attacks. The SmartWater system is a harmless water based solution which contains a unique forensic code.  When detected on an offender, this code provides a direct link to a specific CIT attack, providing robust and irrefutable evidence.

How does it work?

When an offender comes into contact with SmartWater, it leaves a uniquely identifiable code on skin, clothes and anything which it contacts.  To detect, only a tiny speck is needed to fluoresce brightly under UV light; SmartWater is not visible to the naked eye. Around 95% of police forces deploy SmartWater in a variety of forms and their custody suites are fitting UV lighting equipment for the routine scan of those in custody irrespective of arrest.

How effective is it?

SmartWater has a 100% conviction rate when used as evidence in court and has secured over 400 convictions. Often cases involving SmartWater will not go to court because the strength of this evidence.

SmartWater is already a well-known deterrent in the criminal fraternity. By G4S utilising this technology and educating potential offenders, the evidence suggests that we will be able to significantly reduce attacks and obtain more convictions.

SmartWater accreditations

SmartWater is ACPO (Association of Chief Police Officers) approved and is audited by the Forensic Science Service. SmartWater has an ISO 27001 organisation and maintains the highest level of data security.  ISO 27001 is applied to organisations such as MI5 and GCHQ.
