Bridgnorth Aluminium
G4S Security Services (UK) has been working with Bridgnorth Aluminium Ltd, based in Shropshire, since October 2003.
Challenge
Prior to G4S Security Services (UK)’s involvement, the large Bridgnorth site was run as two companies. The two independently run businesses had a shared ‘in house fire fighting team’, a shared security team, a shared old fire alarm system and a shared main entrance.
In 2003 new investment and changes in business plans resulted in the two sites becoming independent, and the standard of the security cover was not regarded as sufficient or to the required standard for Bridgnorth Aluminium Ltd.
Bridgnorth Aluminium Ltd therefore decided to search the market for a security company that shared their beliefs, who were capable of meeting their high demands, and who could advise and support them on security matters throughout their ever-changing business needs.
The security requirement was going to be a challenge to both Bridgnorth Aluminium Ltd and the successful security company; a complete break from the prevailing security culture was required, there would be investment in a purpose built Security Lodge, a new site entrance, new site traffic plans, the production of new detailed and accurate procedures for the recording of goods in and out, major Health & Safety requirements, the requirement to work for at least six months with the adjoining site and their security team over a shared fire system, and fire fighting team. Securing the perimeter fence, and advice on the installation of CCTV equipment would also be part of the requirement.
G4S solution
In order to provide the best possible security service, G4S Security Services (UK) took the opportunity to engage a number of security experts from within the company: operational managers, the Risk Audit team, Group 4 Technology, HR and recruitment.
To meet the challenges outlined above, G4S Security Services (UK) provides a supervisor for 60 hours a week and a security officer for 168 hours a week to undertake the following duties:
- Access and visitor control
- Vehicle and employee search
- Weighbridge
- Security patrol
- CCTV monitoring
- CCTV equipment and maintenance
- Fire alarm system testing and monitoring
- Goods in control
- Traffic control
- Foreign driver escort and Health & Safety induction
- Accident at work reports, recording and initial investigations, including near misses
- First Aid.
By employing G4S Security Services (UK), the customer has seen the establishment of a fully secure independent site, incorporating state of the art technology, with a skilled security team working as an integral part of key business processes. The Health & Safety monitoring and reporting have been enhanced to an extremely high standard. Communication with foreign drivers attending the site has also been improved and the highest standards of visitor and contractor control introduced.
As a result of the excellent service provided, Bridgnorth Aluminium Ltd were able to re-award the extension to the contract to G4S Security Services (UK), without reverting to a tender process. G4S Security Services (UK) is the first supplier to Bridgnorth Aluminium Ltd where this mutual benefit has been achieved.
