Case study: CORBER

Print

Customer

G4S Security Services (UK)’s agreement commenced in 2001 with the CORBER rail consortium (Costain, O’Rourke, Bachy, Emcore Rail). They are the major civil engineering and construction work contractor for the extension and refurbishment of St Pancras station forming part of the Channel Tunnel High Speed Rail Link project. Their contract is worth around £400 million.

Challenge

The scale and high profile nature of this project demanded a robust and efficiently managed security solution. With terrorist threat levels currently running at a high, and the busy London location of this site, it is essential that risks be mitigated, not least through the provision of well-trained and vigilant personnel.  With changing manpower requirements, it was essential that the customer could continually rely on a rapid response to fulfil these needs at short notice. They also needed a security solution that would allow dynamic control of the access/egress of workers on-site, prevent trespassing and safeguard valuable construction assets.

G4S solution

G4S provides a flexible, responsive and multi-functional solution. Our dedicated management team works closely with CORBER’s security manager to quickly deliver appropriately trained staff to a range of operational areas. G4S also advises the customer on effective deployment of security officers, as well as providing other core security solutions, including:

By working closely with our customer, we can plan resource requirements based on advance notice of events and intelligence.  This ensures that we as a company are responsive to CORBER’s operational and customer service requirements.

Results

The success of this partnership can be highlighted by the considerable growth of this contract since it’s commencement in 2001, demonstrating the customer’s confidence in G4S as a service partner. As a supplier, we have been able to adapt to the changing staffing needs of the customer as well as develop a cost-effective and rigorous security solution. Our ability to deploy the correct amount of resource without compromising security is essential to the smooth running of the contract.

Our staff receive the highest standards of training available in the industry and their quality service has been recognised in numerous industry awards. Of particular note- whilst on duty on the CORBER contract, security officer Muhammad Khalil, showed considerable courage and initiative when the 7/7 bombs struck in the nearby King’s Cross Underground. He spent seven hours assisting with the rescue of trapped passengers and was recently awarded the prestigious Sherrif’s Award for bravery.
