Transit Case Study

A regional transportation district was suffering from
declining ridership and facing a major expansion. The local
Business Improvement District and concerned businesses in
the area created a unique partnership to focus on providing a
safe and secure transportation system for the citizens and
visitors. The local police department needed to be focused
on enforcement and response. Wackenhut’s Custom
Protection Division provided the perfect solution providing
security on the light rail, at transit stations and local bus
stations. With an emphasis on customer service, security
procedures and emergency action principles Custom
Protection Officers® are involved in all aspects of the
transit operation, working closely with the local police
department acting as their eyes and ears and allowing for
optimum utilization of the limited law enforcement
resources. Relying on the strict qualifications standards
and intensive training, the program has provided a
service that has saved the district money by effectively
reducing fare evasion, graffiti and vandalism, and within
the first year of the contract helping to increase ridership
by over 22%, with security enhancements as the most
frequently noted improvement.
“The security officers have an excellent understanding of
how to interact with people, and their interpersonal skills
have assisted numerous patrons and made us comfortable
riding the system again.”
