G4S will provide a range of critical services to support NT Corrections operations outside of the wire, commencing in late March 2025.

The partnership will see our highly trained and qualified personnel deliver critical support services covering Darwin Local Court cell and custody management, prisoner escorts and transfers, hospital bedsits, and watch house support over the coming months. This will allow existing NT Correctional Officers to focus on their core duties within the prisons, ensuring the continued safety and security of the community.

G4S has deployed experienced and qualified staff to deliver these essential services, enabling NT Corrections to increase its staffing numbers inside the wire.

Minister for Corrections Gerard Maley said the partnership between the Department of Corrections and G4S was a crucial step in ensuring the Territory’s correctional system had the necessary workforce to meet increasing custodial demands and support existing staff.

“From next week, G4S staff will assume custodial operations at the Darwin Local Court and by the end of April begin managing medical escorts," said Mr Maley.

“By early April, up to 20 G4S staff will be operational, having undergone the same vetting of a Correctional Officer, ensuring that our existing Correctional Officers can focus on their core duties within the prisons."

Initial deployments will focus on Darwin-based operations, with the potential to expand support to Alice Springs.

“Our priority is ensuring an adequately resourced and staffed corrections system that improves safety, reduces recidivism, and supports rehabilitation,” said Mr Maley.

“This partnership allows NT Correctional Officers to focus on critical custodial operations, while G4S ensures high-quality service delivery for prisoner movements outside the wire.”

G4S Managing Director Rebecca Power said G4S has been a trusted community safety partner for state and territory governments across Australia for more than 25 years.

"The addition of highly skilled G4S personnel means local NT Correctional Officers can focus on critical custodial operations.

"We welcome the opportunity to work with the Northern Territory Government to support their corrections system and ensure safer communities across the Territory," said Ms Power.

The partnership is being implemented under a phased approach to ensure that G4S services are appropriately interfaced with NT Practice to ensure a robust rollout of support.

G4S will continue to deliver exceptional, safe services and make a real difference in the Northern Territory and across ANZ.
