Mythbusting

Common Security Misconceptions
Is physical strength important?

Security is about interacting with people, therefore your people skills are far more important than physical strength. We need people who are friendly, empathetic, emotionally intelligent with negotiation skills. Speaking another language may also be useful.

Is it hard to juggle shifts around my family?

We understand that juggling your home commitments around work is important. We offer flexible shifts (shorter and split-shifts) to support our employees find the right balance for them.

Will I be the only woman?

We have many talented women working across G4S in a variety of roles. In some of our contracts over 40% of the security team are women. We also have a Women's network to encourage female dialogue, challenge any issues, and provide support and encouragement to each other. Historically, it was a male-dominated industry but the face of security is changing.

Are there career development opportunities?

If you have the talent and appetite to develop, we will support you. We have a great professional development pathway through our apprenticeship programme that offers a range of courses and qualifications. We also offer a mentor programme to ensure you have the right support and encouragement when you need it.

Is security a safe role?

Many of our security roles are customer service focused. In these roles, it is important to use your communication, interpersonal, and observation skills to prevent threats and defuse situations. Security is diverse. For example, you might work in a corporate office, a retail premises, or a sports stadium.
