Actions and recommendations to lower your exposure to COVID-19

The spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) around the world and in the United States is rapidly evolving, and we want to assure you that G4S continues to monitor the latest updates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) so we may prepare and respond properly. G4S is working diligently at all levels of our organization to support our personnel and operations. Our primary focus is on the health and welfare of employees like you.

As a G4S Healthcare officer you fall into a category by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) called Healthcare Personnel (HCP). They define an HCP as:

Healthcare Personnel: HCP refers to all paid and unpaid persons serving in healthcare settings who have the potential for direct or indirect exposure to patients or infectious materials, including body substances; contaminated medical supplies, devices, and equipment; contaminated environmental surfaces; or contaminated air.

You come into contact with patients and visitors on a routine basis while at work, therefore, it is important for you to be aware of methods that will help protect you while working as an HCP. With the appropriate actions you are at a LOW risk of exposure.

If projections by the CDC are correct, your service will be needed by the healthcare communities that we serve. Below are a key steps that you should follow to protect yourself from airborne illnesses such as COVID-19:

  1. Practice good hand hygiene, cleaning hands often and thoroughly with soap and water for 20 seconds at the beginning of your shift. Make an effort to wash with soap and water at least once per hour while working in a hospital setting.

  2. Avoid touching eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.

  3. Utilize hand sanitizer dispensers located throughout healthcare sites. Do this in between hand washing with soap and water. Make it a normal practice that when you leave an area of the hospital, for example entering an elevator, use a nearby hand sanitizer while you are riding the elevator to your next stop. Same example can be used prior to entering a stairwell.

  4. Avoid close contact with people who are sick. Maintain 3 to 6 feet of distance from individuals at hospital locations when possible. Remember, you don’t know who is infected, so avoid close contact with people.

  5. Contact your site supervisor to understand your site’s use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). If you are required to use PPE, including gloves, N-95 mask or eye protection, ensure you are provided the equipment by your supervisor and begin using it as instructed immediately. G4S recommends using PPE, including the N-95 mask, if you are working close to infected COVID-19 patients or at a screening post, otherwise N-95 masks are not necessary and should be reserved only for these use cases.

  6. Focus on the utilization of your de-escalation training and position yourself in a positive, in control manner, with appropriate distance that limits your risk of exposure.

  7. If you have to go hands-on with a person, once the incident has transpired, remove your gloves, dispose of them and wash your hands thoroughly. If wearing goggles or safety glasses, wash them before continued use. Once you have washed your hands, a gentle face wash is advised and may assist with light irritation that may occur from the PPE as well.

  8. Cover coughs and sneezes with tissues, rather than bare hands.

  9. Rest and eat well to ensure a balanced diet that contains the vitamins and minerals that lead to a stronger immune system.

  10. Keep your home and work space clean and disinfected.

  11. Use your training and expertise to ensure you follow the processes and procedures when exposures are possible.

  12. Please keep in mind that the COVID-19 virus should not impact the quality of customer service we provide. In fact, a global healthcare crisis such as this requires everyone on our team to empathize with those affected in a healthcare setting. Please remember to conduct yourself in a professional manner at all times.

  13. If you are asked to perform duties that are not typical scope of work and you have concern about the legality, safety or ethics of doing the requested activity, please contact your supervisor.
