Life as we know it has changed, yet as we settle into this new normal, there are lessons to be learned from the work that we do everyday. Our leadership team is no exception. We are learning incredible lessons in professionalism and humanity from our field operations teams. Your work ethic has inspired us as you consistently show us the best efforts, despite what is happening all around. The performance that I am witnessing and the accolades echoed by our customers, simply confirm that our organization is the best security company in the industry.
The stories I hear are remarkable. They include employees who make meals at home to take to our security officers while on post, just so that the officers don’t have to leave the site and risk further exposure. Employees who deliver grocery store gift cards to our healthcare officers as a token of appreciation for the work they are doing. And yet another of an employee who was quarantined for exposure to COVID-19 yet in constant contact with his team and rushed back to work as soon as he was cleared, eager to help his coworkers. We are beyond proud to work among these heroes. If you have stories of G4S heroes like these please share them with us here firstname.lastname@example.org.
Protective measures for frontline staff
The health of our employees continues to be of the utmost importance. G4S is currently working on a program to source additional Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as face masks and gloves, for our staff across the region. Given the worldwide shortage of certain PPE, its use may be prioritized based on level of risk and availability, ensuring that employees who are at a high risk for exposure have the appropriate materials. These include healthcare settings where employees are likely to come into contact with people who could be infected with the virus.
We currently have 32 confirmed cases of COVID-19 within G4S Secure Solutions (USA) and 492 employees in self-quarantine due to possible exposure. The best way for us to flatten the curve is to limit our exposure to COVID-19. To help do so, please follow the guidelines of healthcare officials, including social distancing measures and asking those of you who feel sick to stay home. If you have any symptoms of COVID-19, contact your healthcare professional, inform your manager and please don’t return to work until you are medically cleared to do so.
We continue to experience increased requests for additional posts across the country. As such, our local teams are working to ensure that current employees have the opportunity to work. We are also looking to fill new positions to meet these needs.
Our recruiting team has launched numerous recruitment campaigns in multiple markets across the region. To help with this, we are asking if you know of anyone that is looking for work and matches the requirements for any of our open positions please encourage them to apply through the G4S career site (www.careers.g4s.com/en) or text "JOBS" to 561-660-9797 from a mobile phone.
Myth Busters from the World Health Organization
Since the COVID-19 outbreak escalated to a pandemic, obtaining accurate information about the disease has become more challenging, particularly on social media where misinformation and harmful content is published freely. Sources such as the World Health Organization (WHO) have reliable and factual information about the disease, how to prevent illness and how to cope. Below, you will find several myth busters from the WHO about COVID-19. For a full list please visit the WHO website.
Are hand dryers effective in killing COVID-19?
No. Hand dryers are not effective in killing COVID-19. To protect yourself against the new coronavirus, you should frequently clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand rub or wash them with soap and water. Once your hands are cleaned, you should dry them thoroughly by using paper towels or a warm air dryer.
How effective are thermal scanners in detecting people infected with COVID-19?
Thermal scanners are effective in detecting people who have developed a fever (i.e. have a higher than normal body temperature) because of infection with the new coronavirus. However, they cannot detect people who are infected but are not yet sick with fever. This is because it takes between 2 and 10 days before people who are infected become sick and develop a fever.
Can spraying alcohol or chlorine all over your body kill COVID-19?
No. Spraying alcohol or chlorine all over your body will not kill viruses that have already entered your body. Spraying such substances can be harmful to clothes or mucous membranes (i.e. eyes, mouth). Be aware that both alcohol and chlorine can be useful to disinfect surfaces, but they need to be used under appropriate recommendations.
Are antibiotics effective in preventing and treating COVID-19?
No, antibiotics do not work against viruses, only bacteria. COVID-19 is a virus and, therefore, antibiotics should not be used as a means of prevention or treatment. However, if you are hospitalized for the 2019-nCoV, you may receive antibiotics because bacterial co-infection is possible.
With schools remaining closed for the foreseeable future, we understand that many of our employees are now taking on the role of teacher during this time. For parents that may be in need of additional resources our team has produced more Learning at Home Resources for you this week:
MIT Full STEAM Ahead - A curated set of resources that have been created for the K-12 community that parents, teachers, and students can use right now. Sort by topic or grade.
Google Arts & Culture - This online platform allows the public to access high-resolution images of artworks housed in the initiative's partner museums, including the Tate Gallery in London, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC, and the Uffizi in Florence, Italy. The App now allows you to take a selfie and compare your image to famous works of art, or transform a picture on your phone via the style of famous painters. To try it, open the Camera menu in the bottom bar of the Google Arts & Culture app and select “Art Transfer.” After taking or uploading a photo, choose from dozens of masterpieces to transfer that style onto your image.
Newsela - Engage students with thousands of texts on topics they care about most, with standards-aligned lesson supports built for ELA instruction.
Apple’s Everyone Can Create - Involves making movies, photography projects that can be done in the yard and creative music projects.
Elementari - This connects your child with an interactive way to write and illustrate stories. Elmentari is a K-12 platform to read, write, code, share and remix interactive stories using professional illustrations and sounds.
Quizlet - A free website providing learning tools for students, including flashcards, study and game modes.
Virtual Field Trips to Zoos & Live Webcams - Atlanta Zoo, San Diego Zoo, Smithsonian National Zoo
We must all work towards the common goal of flattening the curve, and in order to do so we must take seriously the threat COVID-19 poses, as well as following the advice of the medical community. Please continue to wash your hands as often as possible, maintain a safe social distance from others while on-duty and off, avoid those that may have any symptoms of COVID-19 and isolate yourself if you are sick.
The continued commitment by our employees continues to amaze me. While our team has shown perseverance in the past in the face of adversity, such as hurricanes or natural disasters, COVID-19 is a unique threat in and of itself. Current circumstances are expected to continue for several weeks and we now know this is a battle of endurance. Please take care of yourselves and your families, we value your contributions and are here to support each other through this difficult time.
