Making Travel Safer
THE CHALLENGE: OVERVIEW
This customer is the world’s longest fully automated driverless Metro System. It covers 47 stations, three Depots and several other buildings such as the Main Power Station, Traction Power Station and Control & Command Centres. It’s overseen by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), the government authority responsible for providing transport to the public of the UAE.
When G4S was chosen to design, supply and install CCTV surveillance systems for this transportation system, there were a number of challenges. First of all, we had to be fully aware of the time constraints involved in implementation. For example, in order to avoid having to shut down the Metro, we could only do work after midnight when the stations were closed.
Also, it was important to be aware of and follow the safety precautions and proper guidelines of the Health and Safety policy while working within the metro premises. With all this in mind, G4S took strategic action to design a solution that would meet the needs of this customer and create a better and safer metro system.
THE GOALS
The goal was to implement this comprehensive CCTV project without disrupting the experience for those travelling on the RTA Metro transportation system. The large-scale installation required video surveillance technology that would stand up to the weather in United Arab Emirates and would also be adaptable to fit each location.
G4S proposed a CCTV system that would help reduce risk by covering the areas within the station and also tracking the perimeters to monitor any unfavourable movements of people in the area. We also proposed a central control room to manage surveillance, equipped with state of the art security technology.
THE SOLUTION
We installed the surveillance system on a dedicated network backbone, so we could ensure full and reliable coverage. The solution included 1,860 video surveillance cameras.
- CCTV was installed at each station, as well as all depots and miscellaneous buildings.
- All cameras were connected to a central control room, making it easy to monitor the entire route of the Metro in Dubai from one location.
- We also designed, supplied and installed state of the art equipment in the Control Room, to be used by Police Authorities.
THE RESULTS
In this case, the video security was successfully upgraded for the entire system. The cameras monitor any security infringements or suspicious behaviour and allow the dedicated Metro Police to respond to incidents and threats more quickly.
The design and implementation of this security solution met the high standards of customer satisfaction required by the RTA. G4S was conscious not to disrupt the daily flow of passengers through the stations and planned all installation work during hours when the metro was not functioning.
As a result, passengers on the Dubai metro are able to enjoy safer journeys throughout the entire route.
