PT PLN Nusantara Power - UP Muara Karang (PLN NP) is one of Indonesia’s key power plants, supplying electricity to millions of homes and businesses in the Jawa-Bali region. It is a subsidiary of PLN, a state-owned utility company which is the country’s largest power generation company. In 2022, G4S Indonesia approached PLN NP to carry out a security optimisation plan which would transform its conventional offering into one underpinned by cutting-edge technology.

G4S implemented an advanced security solution over a two-year period – the key feature being the integration of all security systems into PLN NP UP Muara Karang's control room to enable centralised monitoring.

It also includes a smart patrol system, which uses GPS tracking to optimise patrol routes for security officers and prioritises high-risk areas. In addition, security officers receive real-time alerts on their mobile devices about any incidents, enabling them to respond quickly.

Vehicle plate and facial recognition technology are in use too, as is a visitor management system and a CCTV access control system.

As part of its offering, G4S trained PLN NP’s in-house security officers and contractors to use the new technology, and provided refresher training on the most effective security techniques and processes.

This project was overseen by our Electronic Security Solutions team who are experts in innovation planning and technology consultation. They started with identifying the unique requirements of the customer and aligning them with innovative solutions; then they delivered a proof of concept before a full rollout began to ensure we were delivering practical and field-appropriate solutions.

Gold Score in a National Police audit

The new security solution was inspected by the Indonesia National Police (Mabes Polri) in March 2024 under the Security Management System Audit. This evaluates the security protocols of organisations to ensure compliance with national safety standards and best practices.

They awarded it a Gold Score of 94.18%, an exceptionally high mark given the audit’s rigorous standards.

Operational benefits

As well as improving site security and reducing the risk of unauthorised access, there have been operational benefits, including faster incident response times. The integration of advanced technologies has also enabled security officers to focus more on critical tasks rather than routine activity.

Achmad continues: “We were very efficient with our time and maximised cross-team collaboration due to the multiple stakeholders we were coordinating with, which could easily have led to us falling behind schedule.”

“This project demonstrates that we are a trusted partner when it comes to securing vital national infrastructure – and the audit reflects the exceptional reliability and effectiveness of the security measures we’ve implemented. We have set a new standard in the industry and it reinforces our reputation as a leader in integrated security solutions.”
