recognises G4S at safety awards
Effective safety initiatives and a reduction in incidents have helped G4S in Malaysia secure a prestigious Silver Award at the Shell Malaysia Safety Awards 2019

A strong commitment to employee safety, worker welfare initiatives and innovative leadership have seen Safeguards G4S awarded the prestigious Silver Award, the only winner in the Corporate Category at the annual Shell Malaysia Safety Awards.
In the past three years, Safeguards G4S has shown industry-leading dedication to a range of health and safety initiatives in Malaysia that have seen the number of workplace incidents fall dramatically. On July 17, members of G4S’s Malaysia team accepted the award from Shell as part of the sixth annual SMSA ceremony.

“This is an extremely important milestone for us. It is recognition of the progress made in the last four years, during which time all of our employees have helped us improve health and safety standards. I would like to thank Shell for this award.”
Since 2016, when a road safety programme and policy were launched, the number of serious road traffic incidents has fallen by more than 50 per cent. In 2017, Safeguards G4S recorded zero serious injuries, zero fatalities, and had significantly decreased lost time injuries.
In 2018, G4S plc’s Director of Health and Safety, Herman Kok, said overall improvements and excellent safe work standards were maintained.
“Our team in Malaysia has demonstrated an unwavering passion to improve the safety of their work,” he said.
“They have managed significant road safety risks with a large fleet of vehicles and motorcycles. The number of lost time injuries has steadily reduced through a sustained and tenacious effort by Nick, HR Director Ragvinder Singh, Health and Safety Manager Sinnatambi Rajoo, and the rest of the team.”
Positive safety changes made in Safeguards G4S in the past few years range from large scale upskilling, such as giving first aid training to all officers working on international accounts, to individual touches, such as ensuring all employees who commute on a motorcycle wear high visibility safety vests or jackets. These changes have improved the services offered by Safeguards G4S, as well as reducing road accidents after work hours.
Under the We Care programme, staff are given better health and safety training from their first day, and signs and hazards are more clearly marked throughout the business’s workplaces.
There are six categories in the Shell Malaysia Safety Awards: Upstream, Downstream, Corporate, Health, Most Improved and Environment. Significantly, Safeguards G4S also received a special mention in the Health category for its worker welfare programme, which showed improvement in productivity and performance, empowered workforce, and decreased attrition.
Shell Malaysia’s Chairman, Datuk Iain Lo, said the awards form part of the global Shell commitment to achieve no harm and no leaks across their global operation.
“I am proud of this event which is growing from strength to strength with the continuous support from our contractors and partners, but most importantly, in their commitment and dedication towards upholding the ‘Goal Zero – No Harm, No Leaks’ safety principal,” Mr Lo said at the award ceremony.
The SMSA awards are an annual opportunity for Shell to recognise outstanding performance by its business partners and contractors. The awards aim to highlight excellent HSSE work culture built on care and openness where employee safety is at the heart.
