We’ve been talking to Keith about his career transition and his advice for ex-military personnel entering the private security sector.
Keith Freeman’s progression from military service to a career in security
Keith Freeman, now Learning & Development Manager for Cash Solutions UK, joined G4S shortly after leaving the Army in 2005.
After serving in the Royal Anglian Regiment, 1st Battalion, including tours in Northern Ireland and Afghanistan, Keith began as a driver operating out of the Cambridge branch, and saw first-hand the opportunities available to someone from a military background.
“I feel that there are certain characteristics inherent in those that have served in the military, that provide a solid platform to succeed elsewhere – at least in my experience”
“I think it gives you extra drive and motivation to do the job that’s in front of you to the best of your ability – and to do it to a better standard than expected – which will help you get noticed.”
"Don’t be discouraged by setbacks, and be prepared to potentially start at a lower level" – that’s his advice to those transitioning from military service to the private security sector.
Keith's will to succeed is what saw him move to the G4S Leicester branch in 2008, where he combined his role as a driver with other duties in the office, including a training role.A few years later he successfully applied to become an Operational Trainer based in Coventry where, despite being the newest member of the team, he was soon promoted to a senior role. Further promotions followed, first as Training Manager in 2022 before accepting his current role.
“I think a mistake a lot of people make is to assume that your military rank should carry over to a certain level of job in civilian life.” Keith said.
“But, really, it’s a different world and you have to prove yourself all over again. Just because you were a corporal or a sergeant in the military, you can’t expect to walk straight into a senior or leadership role.
Keith encourages those making the transition to view setbacks as learning experiences: “If things don’t go as planned, regroup, learn from the experience, and keep pushing forward.”
