Royal reception for Butler Trust winner Alwiya Aboudi

A passion and commitment to the wellbeing of the young people in her care has seen Oakhill STC’s chaplain Alwiya Aboudi receive a commendation from HRH Princess Anne.
Alwiya Aboudi

Affectionately known as 'Aunty' by both colleagues and the young people she supports, Alwiya received the prestigious Butler Trust commendation for her 20 years of dedicated pastoral care in custody.

Before joining the Oakhill STC four years ago, Alwiya spent 16 years at HMP Woodhill, becoming the first female Muslim chaplain appointed in the adult estate.

“Aunty is one of the first people the children see during the admissions process, which can be very daunting,” said Michelle Price, Director of Oakhill STC.

Going above and beyond

Alwiya consistently goes the extra mile to ensure the young people at Oakhill are supported, whether that’s spending time with those without visitors, giving birthday cards and vouchers and cooking to celebrate significant events – often in her own time.

“I can honestly say that when the children are around Aunty, they light up and become the best versions of themselves – polite, engaged and very smiley,” Michelle added.

“The respect she receives is inspiring and it is so easy to feel the kindness that Aunty exudes, which makes us all feel appreciated and valued.”
Her calming nature and reassurance undoubtedly helps this process. At this very emotional time, when a child can feel so much uncertainty, she offers compassion, comfort and optimism.
