G4S has been contracted to help the University deliver its five-year Carbon Management Plan targeted at carbon footprint reduction of 43% by 2020. In addition it is acting as the University’s carbon and energy advisor for the estate management team.

G4S will be working with the University to ensure it complies with statutory energy requirements such as the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme and Display Energy Certificate and will also be supporting the management of utility tendering, reporting, procurement and forecasting activities. The contract, which was won following a competitive tender process, will last for two years, with an option to extend for a further year.

Roger Hawes, who heads up G4S Carbon & Energy Solutions, said: “We are delighted to partner with the University of Hertfordshire. Carbon and energy management is a key strategic focus for G4S, both internally for our own estate and for our external clients. We have seen increasing demand for our services as the Government continues to drive a reduction in carbon emissions to meet its 2020 Kyoto target.”

Andrew May, Director of Estates and Hospitality at the University of Hertfordshire said: “Reducing our carbon footprint and becoming more sustainable is a key driver to the University’s estate strategy and corporate plan.  We are currently building the UK’s first true zero carbon student accommodation scheme and the work we will be doing with G4S will help us achieve our carbon reduction targets.”

G4S Facilities Management has an annual turnover of around £300 million and provides total facilities management services including cleaning, catering, security, hard FM, helpdesk services, carbon & energy solutions and FM compliance to clients in the public and private sector.
