International Code of Conduct for private security providers

G4S are founder signatories to the International Code of Conduct (PDF 8742.2 KB) for private security providers. The code was developed by the industry, civil society representatives and the Swiss, UK and US Governments.

It sets out principles for security operations in areas experiencing or recovering from disaster or unrest and where governments and the rule of law are weak. It covers protective security services delivered by staff whether armed or unarmed, and any other activities where staff are required to carry a weapon. The code covers recruitment, vetting and training of staff, the use of force by security company staff, including the handling of firearms, health and safety and reporting and complaints handling.

G4S is playing a leading role on the steering committee set up to ensure the Code becomes an effective tool for driving up standards in the global security industry.

United Nations Global Compact

In 2010, we became a signatory to the UN Global Compact, the international standard which promotes socially responsible business behaviour in the areas of human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption.

Early in 2012, we published our first UN Global Compact: Communication on Progress, reaffirming our support of the Ten Principles of the United Nations Global Compact. This outlines the actions we have undertaken to improve the integration of the Global Compact and its principles into our business strategy, culture and daily operations during 2011.

Industry participation

G4S senior executives are active on the Boards of COESS, the Confederation of European Security Services, which represents the European security industry, ASSA-I (Aviation Security Services Association – International), representing the aviation security sector, and EOS, the European Organisation for Security, another EU-wide security industry body.

Senior G4S executives also hold membership of the Danish Law Council, the GC100, an organisation for general counsel and company secretaries of the FTSE 100 and the 100 Index Club of Chief Financial Officers.

For more information about our engagement with stakeholder groups, please see our Integrated Report.

We continue to improve our communication and engagement with key stakeholder groups to ensure that our strategy is aligned to their needs and that, as our CSR programmes and industry participation develops, we seek input and advice from those around us. Taking this proactive approach to raising global standards has helped build G4S’s reputation with governments, customers and employees, while ensuring we can deliver a sustainable return for our investors.

As a global leader in security solutions, G4S is a member of many different national and regional groups and associations.
