As well as raising £75,000, the match now holds the records for both the longest ever game of rugby and the highest scoring.

The event was organised by G4S insurance claims investigator Alan Knell, who has previously been hailed by colleagues across the country for his dedication to the charity Scotty’s Little Soldiers, which supports the children of Armed Forces personnel killed in the line of duty.

G4S supported Alan’s latest fundraiser with a donation of £3,000 to help stage the game, which saw a team from Scotty’s Little Soldiers take on a team from HM Forces.  The 44 players pushed their bodies to the limit to play continuously for 24 hours 50 minutes, a quarter of an hour longer than the previous record.  The HM Forces team emerged victorious, prevailing by 1,742 points to 828.  In doing so, they nearly trebled the previous world record for a high-scoring rugby match.

The match was played at Welford Road, the home of Leicester Tigers, on 31^st May and got off to a flying start when the Red Devils’ free-fall team sky-dived into the stadium.

Alan Knell said:

“It was just an amazing day, there was a good amount of spectators who gave the players their full support, and 44 of the children supported by the charity met the players and gave them water throughout the match.  It was a really touching sight, and the smiles on their faces made it all worthwhile for the players.

“It was really tough overnight, at one point we were down to 14 players a side as all the substitutes were carrying injuries. But when the sun came up we got a full English breakfast into them, around 750 fans arrived to cheer them on and they got stuck right back into it.

“We might have been able to play a bit longer, but one of the players got quite a serious back injury, so as we’d just beaten the record we decided to bring it to an end and not put anyone else at risk.

“It has been great to have the support of colleagues at G4S and we’re grateful to the company for the donation which helped us to stage this event.  Everyone is delighted with how much we’ve been able to raise for the charity – it will make a massive difference to the children we support.”
