Scottish Prison Service announces intention to award prisoner escorting services contract to G4S

The Scottish Prison Service has today announced its intention to award the contract to provide all court custody and escorting services to G4S Care & Justice Services.

The seven-year contract, which begins in January 2012, includes the escorting of all prisoners in mainland Scotland and islands, between prisons, police stations and courts as well as all external visits, including hospital visits.

Russell Hobbs, Managing Director of G4S Court Services, said:

“G4S has unrivalled expertise in the care and transport of prisoners, and we were the first private company to take over court services from the public sector in England and Wales in 1993.

“We are delighted to be providing court services for Scotland and look forward to working with the Scottish Prison Service.”

The contract is likely to involve the transport of around 180,000 prisoners each year.

G4S Court Services business has been awarded the British Safety Council 5 star award, the British Safety Council Sword of Honour, Investors in People and Investors in Excellence accreditations.
